What It Costs to Buy a Graded Pokémon Card (2026)
Short answer: The sticker price isn't what you pay. Auction houses add a buyer's premium of about 20–22% on top of the winning bid. Marketplaces usually add nothing at checkout, but their seller fees are already built into the price. Buying direct from a collector skips both. Whichever route you take, check the cert number yourself before you pay.

The math on a $500 card
- Auction at 20% premium: $500 hammer + $100 premium = $600 before tax and shipping.
- Auction at 22% premium: $500 + $110 = $610 before tax and shipping.
- Marketplace listing at $500: $500 + tax (+ shipping if not free). But the seller paid roughly 13% in fees, which is usually baked into that $500 (see our seller-fee comparison).
- Direct from a collector at $500: $500 + tax, with shipping and insurance included.
eBay's Authenticity Guarantee now starts at $200
From about August 2026, eBay lowered the Authenticity Guarantee threshold for trading cards from $250 to $200. Cards at or above $200 route through PSA for a check against the listing before they reach you. That is real protection. Two things to know:
- It adds a shipping leg, so delivery takes longer.
- It checks the card against the listing. It is not a regrade.
Protection is not the same everywhere
Marketplace buyer protection is a real reason some people pay marketplace prices, and that's fair. When buying direct, your protection is the seller's written policy plus your card issuer's chargeback rights. Read the refund policy before you buy — ours is here.
Checklist before you pay anywhere
- Find the cert number in the listing or on the label in the photos.
- Look it up on the grader's own site: PSA or CGC.
- Match the card name, set, number and grade.
- Add up the total: price + premium + tax + shipping + insurance.
- Know your claim window.
